Nagel students partner with Chik-fil-A for wellness challenge
Seventh grade students at Nagel Middle School partnered with Chick-fil-A restaurant on Beechmont Avenue to create a healthier version of the restaurant’s popular Original Chicken Sandwich. This is the seventh year for the popular and delicious project.
During the past five weeks, wellness students learned to make healthier nutritional decisions. Students were asked to use their knowledge to create a lightened-up version of the chicken sandwich using the following criteria:
1. Lower the nutritional requirements (calories, sodium and saturated fat)
2. Sandwich must be unique and creative
3. Sandwich should be tasty
Students submitted more than 300 designs. The 12 finalists created their sandwich at the Chick-fil-A on Beechmont Avenue and presented it to a panel of judges, who scored the creations by their nutritional information, taste, and marketability.
Judges selected students Caleb Herzog and Nick Whitney as winners for their “Day at the Beach” sandwich which featured a wheat bun, grilled chicken filet, coleslaw, avocado, sweet pickles, and sweet and sour sauce.
“It was a good way for me to learn everything that’s healthy and everything we need to know in a diet and how many calories to eat in a day,” said Whitney. “It paid off in a good way and it was really fun to do.”
Thank you to Chick-fil-A and owner Chuck Perkins for their support!
