FHSD Esports Returns for a Second Year

Students continue to sharpen their competitive gaming skills and explore future careers through Esports at Forest Hills School District. The Esports program, which is short for electronic sports, has entered its second year. Led by Adam Samuels (Technology Teaching and Learning Support Specialist), Troy Spitzmueller (Science Teacher, Anderson), and Brian Proffitt (Intervention Specialist, Wilson), students on varsity and junior varsity teams comprised of a mixture of Turpin and Anderson students compete in various video games through the league Esports Ohio, a league with over 200 Ohio schools. 

The program helps further the district’s mission of providing all students with a sense of belonging at school. Esports integrates healthy high school competition with opportunities to build computers, engage in graphic design, provide commentary through live streaming, and learn more about Information Technology (IT). 

Through a team-based gaming environment, students also build new relationships and explore future careers, such as but not limited to: graphic design, computing, commentating, broadcasting, and audio/visual. This team was created by students and teachers with support from the Forest Hills Foundation for Education (FHFE), Forest Hills Teacher Association (FHTA), friends and family.

Recently, Forest Hills Esports built connections with University of Akron Esports and the Esports Ohio league sponsor, the Army National Guard. Three of the four teams have started off the season 3-0.
