Anderson and Turpin High Schools Recognized for Excellence in STEM Education

Sep 15, 2023

Fostering curiosity and a love for learning within students is just one of the ways teachers at Anderson and Turpin High Schools make a positive impact within the community. The Ohio Academy of Science announced this week it is awarding both Anderson and Turpin High Schools with The Governor's Thomas Edison Awards for Excellence in STEM Education and Student Research. The Academy recognized several science teachers at Anderson and Turpin with this accolade that acknowledges efforts of encouraging scientific and technological exploration outside of the classroom from the 2022-2023 academic year.

“It is wonderful to have this recognition of our outstanding staff,” said Turpin Principal Andy Jados. “Our teachers go above and beyond each day so that our students can excel not only during the school day but also outside of school hours.”

The criteria that teachers must meet to earn the award include conducting a local science fair with at least 12 students and having at least two participate in the District Science Day. If no local science fair is conducted, then teachers must have at least six students participate in the District Science Day. The other requirement is to have students participate in at least one other youth science opportunity outside of school.

As a result of this esteemed recognition, both Anderson and Turpin will receive a Governor’s Award certificate. Additionally, the 22 FHSD teachers receive a membership to The Ohio Academy of Science. Only 615 teachers in the state earned this honor, selected from 48 schools.
