AHS AND THS EARN GOVERNOR'S THOMAS EDISON AWARDS
Forest Hills School District is pleased to announce that both of the district’s high schools have earned the Governor's Thomas Edison Award for Excellence in STEM Education! The Ohio Academy of Science selected 45 Ohio schools to receive the award for their accomplishments during the 2020-2021 school year. Anderson High School and Turpin High School were selected! Both schools will receive a special Governor's Award certificate.
The AHS Science Department and the following teachers are recipients: Alex Bove, Corey Larrison, Courtney Snider, David Brandon, Emily Dorsey, Holly Lowden, Jeff Rodriguez, Jeffrey Granger, Justin Good, Louise Keep, Patrick Rehl, Taylor Rose, and Troy Spitzmueller.
The THS Science Department and the following teachers are recipients: Beth Brill, Bill Benken, Brett Granger, Carmen Venditto, Corey Mullins, Erin Berling, Gayle Garza, James Glaser, Lindsay Burton, and Peter Hoying.
Criteria for the Thomas Edison Award for Excellence included conducting a local science fair with 12 or more students and having two or more of these students participate in the 2021 Virtual District Science Day. Our students were also required to participate in at least one more youth science opportunity beyond the classroom.
The Ohio Academy of Science defines STEM education as both the mastery and integration of science technology, engineering, and mathematics for all PK-12 students. It incorporates scientific inquiry and technological design through student-focused, project-based curricula to develop skills of communication, teamwork/collaboration, creativity/innovation, critical thinking, and problem solving.
The Governor’s Thomas Edison Awards program was established in 1985 and recognizes Ohio schools and teachers who stimulate scientific student research and technological design and extend experiential opportunities beyond traditional classroom activities. The Technology Division of the Ohio Development Services Agency funded the program.
